Oh that's lovely! Especially for a first try at a new medium! Is this charcoal only, or did you use pastel or something as well?

Thanks a lot :) its not the like first time ever that ive touched charcoal but it was like the first time i sat down and did a project with it you know? And it is all charcoal, the white is white charcoal but what i did was put charcoal powder down on the paper and spread it around and drew the lionfish with an eraser and added the darks in with charcoal... i recommend doing that because it gives your picture a lot more tones you know?

Excellent! The overall shading and value is great, and the white highlights really make it pop. I like the nice ,clean, tight lines as well.

Omgosh! I painted a lionfish forever ago. :giggle: This brings back memories of my class, yours is better, obviously, and I never would've been able to do this in charcoal (well maybe eventually). Here's the one I did forever ago (well four years feels like forever): [link] I should try it again, because I think I could do a ton better now. And I'll probably do it in watercolor because I haven't had a chance to really get into acrylics. ;P

you should do it again!!!! that would be awesome.... Charcoal is difficult but not at the same time lol if you start using it you will learn to love it. Saying "OHH I HATE CHARCOAL" and never use it you never know you know? im just saying that because that used to be me.... lol i used to say how much i hate charcoal even though i never used it.. and actually its VERY easy to use because its very Forgiving! easy to erase and move things around.. you should try it! with this picture i toned the paper with Charcoal powder and instead of drawing with charcoal i drew with an eraser so it was easier to draw.. Its been SOO long since ive done acrylics....... im in drawing mode though! lol trying to get my drawing skills to their peak and then i will paint again :)

Oh no, I really love charcoal because it reminds me of watercolor/painting in a way. I didn't mean to imply that I didn't like it. It's difficult at first, but it's definitely one of my favourite mediums. I can also use it quickly, and get my idea where I can see it. For some reason when I'm using graphite, since it takes longer for me to get the visual representation of what I want on the paper, I end up forgetting what I wanted it to look like in the first place. Weird, I know, but I can avoid that with charcoal since I can work quickly. :D

yeah i know what you mean... it is tough when you have worked with Pencil for so long. But this picture is different because what i did was poured charcoal powder and toned the paper, and then i drew with an eraser pencil. So, its easier to work with because a lot of your tones and shading is already dont for you you just add darker areas and lighter areas for some more variation. you know? lol thanks for commenting :)

ahhh yea i know exactly what u mean, reverse (erasing) process is much easier. I just amaze that you can do those sharp edges so define cuz my edge is more like round and smooth. it doesnt give that realistic factor

really, toning the paper first is like magic lol, you basically just add darks and erase for lighter areas, really does the work for you :)
